Recovery Philosophy

West Michigan Community Mental Health System believes that recovery is a journey of healing and transformation enabling a person with a mental health problem to live a meaningful life in a community of his or her choice while striving to achieve his or her full potential. We believe recovery is possible for all individuals with mental illness, substance use disorders, and developmental disabilities.

Recovery Is…

A continual growth process;
Ultimately my own to achieve;
Assisted, supported by others;
Full of peaks;
An opportunity;
Focused on my strengths;
Unique to me;
Building a full life;
Always Possible

Recovery Is Not…

Step-by-step;
Something someone can “do for” me;
Treatment;
A life without symptoms, relapse, or illness;
A cure;
Something someone must do alone;
Able to be forced;
Easy;
Impossible

"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer."

~ Albert Camus
